Who We Are

As the oldest and largest synagogue in Richmond, Beth Ahabah seeks to build community—among our members; among congregants, clergy and temple staff; and between the congregation and the city at large. We offer a wide range of programming—from interest-based study to a modern vision for Jewish education, to family practice at home and to thought-provoking discussions—that facilitate and inspire lifelong exploration of Judaism and what it means to be a Jew. As a Reform Jewish congregation, Beth Ahabah also creates an inviting space that brings together a diverse membership and encourages congregants to pursue social justice, a core element of our Jewish identity.

Our Mission

Congregation Beth Ahabah draws on its rich heritage to be a home for spirituality, education and community in a diverse, joyful, vibrant and welcoming Reform Jewish environment for today’s congregants and for future generations.

Values and Principles

Congregation Beth Ahabah provides a respectful, accepting and supportive framework within which each congregant may live a fulfilling Reform Jewish life. For this to occur, it is every congregant’s responsibility to:

  • Contribute to the present and future financial viability of the congregation
  • Engage in Tikkun Olam—repairing the world—through social justice and social action
  • Engage in activities that strengthen the bonds of the Jewish people
  • Engage in lifelong Jewish learning
  • Participate in accomplishing our mission for today’s congregants and for future generations

Living Our Values

Congregation Beth Ahabah, meaning House of Love, strives to be an inclusive and welcoming place
by following the ethical principles outlined here.

We hope by living these values we will enrich our lives and relationships at synagogue and home.
